Oh hi there! I am Genevieve. Nice to meet you.
I created this blog to hold myself accountable for writing – creatively, socially, and inanely – while I write my thesis. I welcome your thoughts and critiques and questions.
Why ‘red fire dark’? It’s a line from Jack Kerouac’s Dharma Bums. Years ago I started (and never finished) the book, but I never forgot that image. It took me away and showed me wild, unabashed freedom, alone and in nature. I may not agree on a feminist level with Kerouac’s treatment of women in his works, but I can still find meaning and truth in his words. Same with Steinbeck. Those old white dudes knew how to capture and release experience, unharmed, into the written form.
“Happy. Just in my swim shorts, barefooted, wild-haired, in the red fire dark, singing,
swigging wine, spitting, jumping, running—that’s the way to live.
All alone and free in the soft sands of the beach by the sigh of the sea out there…”
(P.s: David, thank you, because if it wasn’t for your “why not?” I wouldn’t have started this… You know how much I hate unanswered questions.)
